UNDERSTANDING EV BATTERIES: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN CHOOSING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE

How many kWh is the battery? How far can it go? How long does it take to charge? These are common questions among buyers exploring electric vehicles. Understanding how batteries store energy and their charging capabilities makes choosing the right EV model much easier.

DOES BATTERY CAPACITY DETERMINE DRIVING RANGE?

Battery capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), represents the total energy stored in the battery pack. A larger battery capacity generally allows a vehicle to travel longer distances between charges.

However, real-world driving range also depends on energy efficiency. The electric motor, vehicle weight, aerodynamics, road conditions, and driving habits all influence power consumption.

Take a look at an EV model currently distributed in MG’s global lineup: the version equipped with a 64 kWh NCM battery offers a maximum range of approximately 543.9 km under the WLTP standard. This figure shows that battery capacity must be evaluated alongside operating efficiency to accurately assess an EV’s driving range.

WLTP range is measured under standardized test conditions and may vary in real-world scenarios depending on weather, speed, load, and operating conditions. In the near future, MG will introduce another electric vehicle model specially tailored for urban mobility in Vietnam. Register to receive consultation here: https://mgmotor.vn/coming-soon/

AC AND DC CHARGING: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

AC charging (Alternating Current) is typically used at home or at work, making it ideal for long parking periods. DC charging (Direct Current) delivers higher power, significantly shortening charging time and serving well on trips that require quick top-ups. Currently, MG electric vehicles come equipped with genuine portable AC chargers for added customer convenience.

With a suitable fast-charging system, MG electric vehicles can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 25 to 30 minutes under standard testing conditions (*). However, actual charging duration depends on charger output, ambient temperature, battery condition, and the vehicle’s power acceptance rate. Therefore, charging capability should be evaluated alongside daily schedules and practical charging conditions.

Recently, SAIC Motor Vietnam Co., Ltd. (MG Vietnam) and EV Power Co., Ltd. officially held a Strategic Cooperation Agreement Signing Ceremony. Under the agreement, EV Power Vietnam will act as a partner to develop, install, and operate an EV charging station network across all official MG Dealerships, Showrooms, and Distributors nationwide. The system will include both AC charging piles (capacity 7 kW – 22 kW) and high-power DC fast-charging piles (from 50 kW to 150 kW), integrated with the E-Charge smart management platform.

WHICH TECHNOLOGY SUITS YOUR NEEDS?

Different mobility demands require different electrification approaches.

Primary urban commutes with convenient charging access: A battery electric vehicle (BEV) fully satisfies daily transportation needs.

For frequent long-distance journeys: Range between charges and fast-charging capability become key factors to consider.

When charging conditions are not yet convenient: Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) offer effective electrified alternatives by combining an internal combustion engine with an electric powertrain.

Therefore, choosing the right vehicle should start with assessing driving distances, charging availability, and daily driving habits. From there, users can determine the most suitable electrified technology for their needs.

Choosing the right electrified vehicle depends on driving needs and charging conditions.

UNDERSTANDING BATTERIES TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE

An electric vehicle is an integrated system of the battery pack, motor, charging system, and energy management technology. Each component contributes to overall performance and driving experience. Understanding these fundamentals helps buyers easily read specifications, compare EV models, and select the right electrified technology for daily use.

(*): Charging time from 10% to 80% for vehicle versions equipped with a 64 kWh battery (such as the MG4) ranges from 25 to 30 minutes when using a 150 kW DC fast charger under standard testing conditions. Actual charging time may vary depending on various factors, including ambient temperature, battery health, current battery level, and charger output.
